Fizik Antares 00 Carbon Braided Wing Flex Road Bicycle Saddle Review

Part 1
This seat is lighter than some seat post clamps. It is a beauty, too. However, it is no comfort queen. This was expected. Hopefully, as I ramp up the mileage in the spring, my butt will toughen up. On the other hand, I've always have had good luck with flites -- which are not exactly spring supported brooks. Where flites tend to be narrow, almost hatchet like, this seat has a very flat top, so your sit bones are going to ride on top of it rather than snugging down. For just a few grams more and a several dollars less, you can get a more comfortable seat, and as comfort has a big impact on efficiency & performance, that might be a smarter choice. The real measure of this seat will be on the back side of a century. I will re-post further into the season. In the meantime, for weight and star wars styling... this seat is very cool.

Part 2
As noted in following posts to my original post, I've found this seat to be very comfortable on my Ibis titanium road bike. I logged some long rides and have no complaints. I loved this seat so much that I bought one for a friend's "Black Lung" Ibis carbon Hakaluggi. It looks hot on the the Hakaluggi. It rides hard as hell.

I mean, when I ride the Hakaluggi, I am taking a beating and my butt hurts even on short rides. So first off, yes your seat makes an important incremental difference, but there is a WORLD of difference between titanium and carbon. Duh. So don't expect this seat to cure the stiff ride that newer carbon bikes and older aluminum bikes often (not always) dish out.

Second, this seat may take a good bit of breaking in. I could not believe that two identical seats could feel so unalike. So I did a "flex test" on the "wing flex" of this seat. I placed both hands on the opposite pads where your sit bones rest and pushed down, released and push down again. You get the picture. Sure enough, the older seat appears to have a little bit more give, while the new seat is a good bit stiffer.

Of note, the rail position with regard to the seat post clamp is nearly identical on both bikes, so the difference in harshness of the two rides should not not be due to a seat-rail-flex variable messing up my impressions. But even seat post clamps have different flex characteristics. The Ibis has a titanium seat post (I can't recall the manufacturer right now). The Hakaluggi has a crank bros carbon 11, which seams to have more flex than the titanium post, and includes a crank bros 7 x 9 clamp to accommodate carbon rails. (I think it a rip-off that you have to pay addition money to get the carbon rail post clamp, but that is for another review...).

Also, there is the possibility that there is a range of "wingflex" that is not tightly controlled before it leaves the factory. Carbon is, after all, tricky stuff to predict.

Okay - still a great looking and incredibly light weight seat... that is comfortable when placed on a bike with a forgiving frame.

Polar RS400 Heart Rate Monitor Watch with Free IRDA - USB2 Interface Review

The RS400 foot pod gives very repeatable results. Initially, with no calibration, the foot pod was 7% accurate for me. It didn't matter if the distance was 3 miles or 9 miles it maintained a 7% error. I did a manual correction using data from a 7 mile run and the unit is now about 1-2% accurate. I think I can improve it better if I calibrate it using data taken from a 1600m track run. I personally like doing the manual correction because it allows me go back to a previous factor if a new one does not perform better.

My wife happens to have the Garmin Forerunner 405 while I went with the Polar RS400sd so we have been able to compare both systems. They both can measure and record your workouts and come with s/w for your computer. Both s/w packages have a workout diary and allow you to define custom workouts and upload them to your watch. This feature is great for interval training. No more having to remember how many laps you've completed or how much your pace should change. I think the Garmin s/w might have a slight edge compared to Polar's. Overall both systems work very well, each with their +/-. Here are some notable features for each.

Polar RS400 Pros:
-No need to look for GPS satellite signals
-Very Repeatable results
-Calories burned calculation based on hear rate.
-Good battery life
-Display Screens very customizable
-Capable of manual calibration
-comfortable wrist unit

Polar RS400 Cons:
-Do need to calibrate foot pod for best accuracy
-Downloading workout data is temperamental with IR connection
-Auto laping feature based on start of workout not on the start of the last lap. It would be cool to be able to record a lap manually and then continue auto laping based on that point.
-foot pod is a little bulky (but surprisingly unnoticeable while running)
-Have to manually erase workout data after download. Would be nice if this was done automatically.

Garmin 405 Pros:
-GPS receiver in wrist unit
-No need to calibrate
-Actual route can be viewed on a map
-Buttonless screen navigation
-Data download connection to computer is very robust.

Garmin 405 Cons:
-Have to set you watch out for a few minutes to look for GPS satellites
-Watch unit needs to be recharged regularly (GPS is power hungry)
-Watch is a little bulky
-Buttonless screen feature can be temperamental during a workout

Martin Saber Takedown Bow, 35-Pound, Camouflage Review

Coming from a youth bow (I'm a 6'2" 185lbs male), I really needed something more my size. I thought that the 35lbs version was going to be too small, it was actually just right. Having not put together a bow before, it took me a little while to put it together, but it works like a charm. And, for $200 it was a good deal.

The bow is fairly big, I haven't measured it before, but I think it's about ~60".

If you haven't shot a bow before, or a bow with significant draw weight, don't over do it. It took me a while to get used to 35lbs. I probably would have hurt myself if I would have ordered the 50lbs version.

For anyone who has had the predecessors to this stand, the Big Game Ultramax and Legacy, you know what I'm talking about. The double rail sections are more flimsy, the stand platform is much smaller and the seat is no where near as good as the Flex Core. The seat is also flimsy and moves around vs the rock solid seats of the previous versions which were the best seats on the market bar none. Compare weights between this ladderstand version and previous versions and you'll understand what I mean about skimping. Very disappointed in what use to be my favorite treestand manufacturer.

My husband has been wearing boots for as long as I've known him. Every one of his jobs, from the minitary, to being a welder to now being in law enforcement, he has always needed to wear boots. He is also always been a very avid hunter. We live in northern Minnesota, so here you can hunt everything from grouse to deer. From waterfowl to bear. There's never a time of year here where some kind of hunting season is not in full swing. So not only has he always had all kinds of work boots, but also all kinds of hunting and casual boots.

A few weeks ago he realized that he was unable to find the boots he wore last fall/winter, and needed to buy a new pair. We looked into some of the other lines of Irish Setter boots, but saw that some of them had comments/complaints on other sites about the tread being very slick on any kind of wet surface. People saying that even walking on wet concrete would cause them to slip like they were walking on ice. So we ordered these instead.

At first when he tried them on, he said they were the best fit he's ever had, but wasn't sure what he thought of the boots style. He's always had more rounded boots, like you see in the steel toe design. These are a slightly more dressy boot. Dressy might not even be the right word, since you're not exactly going to pair these with a suite. They just don't have that work boot look to them. And when you are use to that rounded work boot style, these may seem a little different at first.

However all it took was one day out walking the trails looking for grouse for my husband to come home and announce that these were his all time favorite boots. They have just the right amount of cushion, but also being non-insulated, his feet don't overheat. Normally after a day of walking he comes home with a sore back. He commented that the boots even prevented him from getting back pain. He's hooked and every time he puts these on, he goes on and on about how much he likes them.

He's a solid size 12 in pretty much every brand, and the sizing for these was spot on. The size 12 fit him like a glove. They color and style of these boots make them nice enough that wearing them with a pair of jeans and a button up shirt is more than suitable for going out to dinner. Then throw them on with your camo and blaze orange and they are a perfect match for walking the trails. They are well worth every penny.

Smartwool Men's PhD Smartloft Divide Full Zip, Black size XL Review

This jacket is so thin & light it is hard to believe it will keep one warm in the winter but I have been pleasantly surprised. I use this as a top layer with 2-3 wool layers underneath for cycle riding down to 20 degrees in perfect warmth without getting steamy & sweaty. The windbreaker material on the front panels is effective at blocking the wind, while heat & moisture escape from the arms & back. On very cold gusty days you can feel the wind penetrate the arms but I have not found that to be uncomfortable, but it is perceptible.

The garment has also held up well to a few slips & falls while mountain biking in the snow, ice, & mud. The material looks thin & delicate but has not torn or snagged, and so far shows no worse for wear.

I am a lean 6'1" & 160 lbs and the medium fit leaves room for a few thin layers underneath without being tight. A size small would probably give someone my size a snug cycle jersey type fit.
