Product Description

The new Orca Sonar Sleeveless is a class leading mid-range wetsuit, balancing high levels of performance with value for money. For people serious about open water swimming who prefer the sleeveless/long john style, the Sonar offers more technology than ever before. The Sonar has been constructed from a mixture of 1.5-4mm panels of Yamamoto #39 Cell neoprene, crafted to provide a mix of buoyancy, flexibility and thermal protection. The Sonar also benefits from the comfortable new low profile neck seal, designed to sit flat against the neck, limiting water entry and reducing the incidence of chafing. There is also a 3mm stretch neoprene Speed Transition Calf Panel, which allows for an easier and quicker transition.

Orca Men's Sonar Sleeveless Wetsuit Review

I just tried on 3 different Orca Sonar suits: Orca Men's Sonar Wetsuit (sleeved, sz8) and this suit, the Orca Men's Sonar Sleeveless (sz7 & sz8). This review is just about sizing, since I only tried on the sleeveless and swam in the sleeved. It's mostly lifted from the my sleeved review.

I'm 5.11 170lb 42/32/39. According to Orca's size charts, none of their suits truly fit me. OTH, Orca does provide full measurement details, which is critical for fitting a wetsuit. Most other manufacturers only provide weight and height.

I tried sz7 & sz8. I could barely take a breath in the sz7 after zipping it and it took almost 20m to get it back off again. The sz8 fit MUCH better, despite being for a man 10lb heavier. Sz8 is VERY snug at hips and chest, but not restrictive as was sz7. Fortunately the waist was slightly snug, not baggy. The usual air pocket at the small of the back was tiny and sometimes non-existent depending on my posture.

The arm-holes are VERY large -- much larger than I was used to from my ancient Quintana Roo. It felt a bit odd; it left a good 1/4 of my upper/outer chest and shoulder uncovered.

The neck isn't quit as comfortable as the old-style high-neck on my QR, too. It's got a nice folded-over seal that does keep water out both front and back, but it rubs a LOT more than the older higher one (same neck on both sleeved & sleeveless).

Beware the legs; sz8 is made for 5.11-6.3 and the legs left a good 9in uncovered between ankle and end of suit. If you're 6.3 with long legs, they'd only come a few inches past your knee.

BTW, if you don't want to read swim details in my sleeved review, I wish I had picked sleeveless instead of sleeved. Sleeved is a bit too warm, not really faster, and I don't care for the v.slight arm restriction.

-1 star for the sizing issues; Orca shouldn't feel bad about not hitting 5 stars, though -- nothing off the rack is made for an athletic build.
