Gym Dandy Deluxe Teeter Totter Review

I picked this up at our local warehouse club knowing full well that the weakest link in this brand seems to be the seats. I have a sewing machine and reasonable design skills so I figured I'd get a yard of marine vinyl and make new seat covers for it, as another review suggests. Shouldn't be too difficult. Mine came with shower cap type covers to put over the actual seats, I am not sure if this is an attempt to preserve the seats or if they have always come with this - the teeter totter can be used with these in place but I am still going to try to make something new.

Assembly was straight forward. Everything was packaged and labled well. My only problem was the bracket on the yellow seat bar that held one of the pendulum pieces was crooked so I couldn't get it together but, working on the premise that you can't make something more ruined, I used a pry bar to spread it somewhat and in the end I got it all together. One caveat, I thought it would be easiest to work inside the house and carry it out in two pieces - that center support piece is HUGE and I barely managed to get it out my front door, which is pretty wide. So you might not want to do that.

If you don't have kids "helping" I'd say this should take roughly 40 minutes. I had "helpers" so it took me two days, which included time to deliberate if I should return it because of that yellow bar as well as putting my entire socket wrench kit back together multiple times. (Like I said, "helpers"...)

The design of this is awesome. The gliding motion allows it to work pretty well even with a large weight difference between the users. One of my girls is only thirty-four pounds and I outweigh her by over a hundred pounds but we could still play on it. It's definitely more fun, the closer in weight the users are, but basically no one has to worry about being the fat kid who can't get off the ground. You WILL be able to play on this with your kids (and you will get a good leg work out from it). The seats are big enough that you can put two kids on one side to help balance things if needed.

My kids are 2, 5, 5, and 9, and all 4 have been playing on it in various pairings. I did not think the 2 year old would be big enough but he climbed up the second he saw his chance and the 5 year olds took turns with him. He had a blast. I had to tell them to tone it down a few times as he appeared to be in danger of becoming airborne - you will want to watch little ones to keep them from being launched. I thought the lock to prevent use seemed kind of silly but it really is a good idea if you have little ones. You can get some serious air with this teeter totter.

Other than the potential launch factor, this seems very safe to me. I have not-so-fond memories as as child of standing on one of those gliders that are on the metal swing sets and getting my fingers mashed where it hinged, which must have been a common problem as in later years they started to put guards over those. The mashability risk of this toy seems low to me. You don't need to put your fingers near the pivots and they are roomy enough that I don't think you would get stuck if you did.

Time will tell how this holds up. I'm already anticipating the seats needing replaced but the rest of it seems pretty solid. The frame is HEAVY and even with two adults on it, it doesn't move. We haven't anchored it yet, not sure if we will. Probably not. It would just be one more thing to bother with when moving it to mow the grass.

If you're wondering how high this goes, when the end is as high as it will go it is a good 50 inches off the ground - it's really a super height for a little kid. This company also makes a spinning teeter totter which I would love to give a whirl as well but I'm just not convinced the up and down motion would be as good as this one - and I would really worry about the littlest one being flung off. So far despite some crazy standing or popping each other in the air high-jinks, no one has fallen off or been hurt on this one. The spinning version from what I can tell only goes 3 feet so I really think this one is superior for up and down. My 3 youngest have been having an absolute blast playing with this so far this summer - my husband was sure it would get old after a few days but it's a rare day they don't spend a lot of time on this. One of the 5 year olds will announce "It's teeter totter time!" and the others come running. The shrieks and laughter are priceless. It's fun enough when my husband and I get on with each other but I wish I could be a tiny little kid on here. It must feel like an amusement park ride to them.

My only quibble besides the chintzy seat covers is, the bumpers under the seats don't do a whole lot. They are making holes in our yard so it's kind of like they may as well not even be there - I might just remove them.
