Tica UGSA12XH2C Surf Casting Fishing Rod (X-Heavy, 12-Feet, 2-Piece, 20-50 Pound) Review

This will never be my "go to" rod. It is definitely not a casting dream. First, for a graphite rod it is heavy and thick. The butt is a larger diameter than my OceanMaster heaver, rated at the same line and lure weights, and that rod is a graphite/fiberglass composite. I use a Fish N Mate cart and the rod sticks in the rod holders because the butt is so large. It only has 7 line guides. My OceanMaster has 9, and my Penn Torque has 10. It lacks the response and sensitivity I expected in a graphite rod. It is at least as heavy as my OceanMaster.
I paired it with an Akios 656CTM, which is a wonderful reel. With the same line/rig/sinker combination my OceanMaster paired with a Penn Squall cast further by more than a little bit. This should not have been the case. The Akios should outcast the Penn every time. I made numerous casts and was consistently disappointed. I tried it with 5 oz., 6 oz., and 8 oz. sinkers plus bait. Nothing worked well. I tried off the ground, pendulum, and John Holden's "Easy Cast". No casting style or sinker combination came close to the distance of my OceanMaster/Penn rig.
The hook retainer is nothing more than a "U" shaped wire held to the rod by what is essentially a rubber band. I don't know how long it will last but my guess is not long.
On the positive side, the fit and finish are fine and the Fuji reel seat and guides are very good. The cork grip feels dense and comfortable.
I bought this rod because of reviews on the web. Had I seen it in person prior to the purchase I would have walked on by. There are better rods out there in the same price range. I'll keep it, and use it when necessary, but I'll never enjoy it as much as I had hoped.
