Crank Brothers Cobalt 11 Post 27.2mm 350, 20mm Setback Carbon Review
I love crank brothers products. Smart engineering, look cool and light in weight. I have several models of egg beaters, and their handlebars are great. As for the Cobalt 11 post(I own two of them): light, strong and compliant. However, I have had less than stellar (this is a pun....) results with the seat rail binding mechanism. Admittedly, the problems I've had took place during remounts while racing cyclecross and once on my road bike while torquing hard on a race start. In both cases, the nose of my seat pivoted down leaving me nothing to sit on. Ever tried to yank your seat level during a start while in the pack?.... not fun and could be dangerous.
Yes I torque the binding bolt to spec. I did find that using some friction salve helped. But come down hard enough and the seat will pivot. (Note: I weigh 165, and I have broken a pair of fizik seats in the past, so I have to admit there may be some rider issues here).
Another minor pain is that they use a "star" torque head for the binding bolt, so that your typical multi-hex set you may keep in you saddle bag will need to be swapped for a multi-tool that comes with a torque head. From an engineering standpoint, star heads ARE less likely to strip than a hex head, so there is something to be said for that.
Finally, my biggest gripe is that because my road bike seat uses carbon rails, I had to plunk down 25 bucks plus postage for the 9mm carbon seat rail adapter. Don't they think Cobalt 11s are expensive enough! This part should not be a profit maker for them. Common guys, sell it at cost. 5 bucks?
Yes I'd buy it again. Crank bros cobalt 11 stuff is so sexy, I'm willing to overlook the minor flaws in personality. I would hope we all have had a least one girlfriend like that.
