Product Description
The Kestrel 3500 NV measures every environmental condition simply with the press of a button! This unit has a night-vision preserving backlight which helps users to sustain natural night vision. The NV's backlight incorporates an optical filter to reduce overall brightness and minimize blue and green spectrum light to preserve night vision. Additionally, NV backlights are also much dimmer than a standard backlight, making it more difficult to detect with the naked eye in night operations. This backlight appears soft greyish pink, not red, and is still in the visible spectrum, so is not compatible with night-vision equipment. The US Military relies on the Kestrel NV Weather Meters to remain as tough as their operations.Kestrel 3500NV Pocket Weather Meter Review
This little weather monitor has so far exceeded my expectations. What originally surprised me when I first opened the box was how small it is. It is small and light weight, which is convenient when you want to hold it above your head for a while to take readings. I am also very impressed at how sturdy and rugged it seems to be. It feels very solidly put together. Being waterproof also, is obviously pretty important.I was surprised again at how sensitive the impeller is to even the lightest breezes. I can hold the device 2 ft. out from my face and blow towards it extremely lightly and the impeller will still turn and display a reading of 0.5 or 0.8 mph... really impressive.
The max wind gust and avg. wind speed features are a really nice touch. However, be aware that they both reset once the device is powered off. I also really appreciate the automatic wind chill and heat index calculations. You can also change to many different units pretty rapidly.
This devices' sensitivity continually impresses me when it displays a reading of the slightest temperature, pressure, and humidity changes. I can cup my hand around the back of the device(it gauges the humidity via a small hole on the back) and it immediately displays an increase in the relative humidity and dew point temperature. Driving on the hilly roads of Arkansas, the barometer responds to the changing air pressure with the slightest changes in elevation.
I must say that you will want to read the owner's manual if you expect to keep the barometer/altimeter readings accurate. Because air pressure can change from varying air masses and not just changes in elevation, you have to occasionally refer to a topographic map, or Google Earth to manually enter in the elevation of your current location.
If you get this device, you may also notice that the impeller appears to be unbalanced, but again, referring to the manual, you will learn that it is not unbalanced, but is just reacting to the Earth's magnetic field. Once the impeller is rotating, it's rotation is not impeded by the magnetic force, because it is slowed and accelerated on an oscillating pattern, therefore the magnetic forces are canceled out.
The only complaint I have with it so far is that you have to cycle through all the different variables, one at a time, which is a pretty minor inconvenience, but you can possibly mitigate this by memorizing the cycle order of the variables, and cycle through them quickly.
