Thick, self-inflating sleeping pads are made of waterproof PVC material and a soft inner foam. Open the heavy duty boat valve and the core of foam expands as it takes in air to become a comfortable pad. I bought a couple Silverbacks about six years ago and they are great. Put them on a roll a cot and it is a great night sleep or put a double fitted sheet over both and have a double bed in your tent. The Leafield valves allow quick inflation and deflation much better than the little air tubes on other brands of pad. 4 inches of foam inside make for a very comfortable pad. I slep on the roll a cot and Silverback for eighteen days on the Grand Canyon and consistantly got good nights sleep.
