Shimano Stradic STCI43000F Reel Review

After alot of research I decided to buy a pair of CI4 3000's for inshore and nearshore fishing. The primary attribute that attracted me was it's low weight. I considered the new Sustain but the price was notably high and it weighed an ounce+ more. I spooled one reel with 15lb PowerPro Super Slick 8 and the other with Berkley 14lb NanoFil.

I put one reel spooled with 14lb Berkley Nanofil on a 7ft fast action St Croix Mojo Inshore med-light power; the total weight of the rod and reel togther is the same as the Penn Battle 3000 reel (alone) the CI4 replaces. The difference in weight is felt immediately.

I put the other reel spooled with 15lb PowerPro Super Slick 8 on a 7ft fast action Shimano Teramar SE medium power; the total weight of the rod and reel together still feels about the same weight as the Penn Battle reel (alone); maybe slighter lighter.

I'm a kayak fisherman, and casting all day (6 to 10 hours on the water) with with the Penn's would cause my arthritis pain to flare up. With the CI4's I'm pain free all day and the number of casts has significantly increased. The lighter weight makes using bigger top waters to 'walk the dog' all day a pleasure; my favorite being the Mirrolure PopaDog in mullet color.

From other reviews and forums I was concerned about 'flex' since this is not a full metal reel like the Penn Battle. I'm no expert and don't think I've ever experienced 'flex' yet but I've taken the CI4's out on 3 outings so far catching usual south florida inshore species including sea trout, jack crevalle, barracuda, and bluefish. They feel as solid as the Penn Battle when fighting fish.. though the first time I hooked up with a jack the very noticeable difference in weight made me a little nervous about 'flex' but I guess that happens when you read too much =)

The reels are light weight so it may affect the 'feel of balance' of your existing rods. Note I'm not using the word 'balance' in professional technical terms, I'm just beginning my journey into owning rods and reels more expensive than the $50 UglyStik combo so this is a layman's perception of touch and feel. The pairing with the St Croix Mojo Inshore felt like a match made in heaven, basically you forget your even holding anything and making the motions 'walking the dog' or working DOA Shrimp just feels right. The pairing with the Shimano Teramar however felt a little unbalanced where the reel is so light the rod wants to point it's nose downs so I was noticing I was working the rod more. I like a Penn Battle 2000 on the Teramar better than the CI4 3000 so I just bought a CI4 4000 (30lb Suffix 832 braid) to pair with the Teramar. It feels right in the garage but haven't had a chance to take it on the water yet. I picked up a fast action 6'6" saltwater TFO Gary Loomis Signature rod in medium heavy power and put the CI4 3000 (15lb braid) on it and it feels perfect though it's only been out on the water once so far; this will probably become my new freshwater snakehead hunting combo.

The one draw back I found with the CI4 3000 is the reel in speed. It's rated the same as the Penn Battle 3000 but I swear it reels in line faster. I've adapted to spinning the reel slower but initially I was missing strikes because the lure was moving too fast. Realistically I'm probably unconsciously turning the handle faster because its so much lighter I barely feel handling it.

In summary, the CI4 3000 is light and for me a no brainer for south florida inshore/nearshore fishing if your looking to lighten you load. Pay careful attention to pair it with the right rod and the total solution will feel great.
