This is one of the finest light insulation jackets on the market. It's really simple but there's everything you need for serious mountain use.
FIT:
-------------------------------------------------
Sizing comparable to Arcteryx, Marmot and Mountain Equipment .
Beeing 182 tall, 74 kg, with a 39" / 100cm chest I am wearing M, which fits perfect.
Fit is quite Mammut-specific and quit different than the fit of competitor brands.
I think it's great, really snug, while large enough around your chest for free movement,
even with a thick fleece layer or waterproof shell underneath.
Sleeves come, as usual for Mammut jackets, quite fitted compared to competitor
models (Fitzroy etc.), but wide enough for not restricting movements even with
a jacket underneath.
They are a little longer than on most jackets and do have an ideal attachment to the
main body, allowing any movement like lifting of arms without pulling the jacket up from
your waist or getting your wrists naked and cold.
Length of jacket: Very nice, covering your bum, but same length on front and rear,
as a result legs will lift the jacket when crouching.
Perfect helmet-compatible insulated hood. By far the best fitting I have ever worn.
Follows every movement and can be adjusted perfectly (with or without a helmet)
except you are wearing a very big helmet.
Collar comes quite fitted too and is definitely not suitable for wearing several
layers underneath.
FABRICS AND RESISTANCE:
-------------------------------------------------
Regarding materials the Rime Pro uses inside + outside mostly Pertex Quantum,
which is quite breathable and ultra-soft. Just along the shoulders and the upper
side of the sleeves, the more weather resistant but less breathable Pertex
Endurance is used as an ouside fabric.
Materials are top notch and a good compromise between breathability and
weather resistance. Anyway they're less waterproof and less durable than the
outer fabric of some competitor jackets like the ME Fitzroy Jacket
(one of the most interesting competitors in my mind).
So don't expect to wear the jacket for extended periods in rainfalls or
heavy snowfall around 32F/0C.
Design-wise three layers of material are used on the entire jacket:
Insulation fibres are packed in between two layers of fabric that are
stitched through, while the inside of the jacket has an extra layer of
heavenly Pertex Quantum. This construction provides a great snug and
well-protected feeling.
INSULATION:
-------------------------------------------------
Mammut claims the jacket to be ideal for "stop-and-go" activities, as the
insulation ("XTI Climate") shall be breathable (which most microfiber insulations
actually aren't), while still being quite warm.
The insulation is made of a mix of two different silicon-coated hollow-fibres,
which are claimed to be very resistant to washing, even more resistant
than "usual insulations" (like Primaloft).
I neither agree nor disagree, as I haven't owned the jacket for a period long enough.
However, the XTI Climate insulation seems to be really similar and competitive to Primaloft.
I would rate the insulation power to be somewhere in between a 60g and 100g Primaloft jacket.
BOTTOM LINE:
-------------------------------------------------
Pros
- Oustanding, soft and lightweight materials
- Really snug fit
- Perfect hood (as long as you aren't wearing a big helmet)
- according to manufacturer good resistance to high mashine washing frequenices
The cons:
- Neck quite fitted therefore limiting layering options
- Washing with 30C only (like almost any microfibre insulated jacket)
