While the stylishness of winter jackets isn't an important factor, this product definitely looks slick. Definitely a notable characteristic of Marmot products that I've noticed in my jacket and others that wear Marmot products.

The jacket with the removable fleece liner zipped in fit comfortably and snug. I ordered a medium and am 5'6, 155 lbs. Naturally, when I removed the removable fleece liner, the jacket was baggy and noticeably baggy visually. The fleece liner fit perfectly. In most cases, if you're wearing such a heavy, weather-proof coat it is expected you will wear lining that will end up filling up the empty-space that has been built into the coat. With that being said, the size I ordered fit great for me.

Recently went snowboarding for 8 hrs in 25-32 degree weather, and felt warm from beginning to end, from sitting idle to boarding (which tested its warmth during windy conditions). I wore a UA long-sleeved compression base layer (not cold gear) and t-shirt.

I fell quite a few times, jerking my body every which way, and sweat quite a bit. After it was all said and done, I hung up my coat and it looked the same as when I got it in the mail. There were no scratches, rips, unraveling threads, and after letting it air out, it didn't smell (from sweating), although that isn't an excuse to at least launder the fleece liner.

The luxury of having several pockets on both the outside and inside of the jacket for different purposes with waterproof zippers is fantastic.

The best part is I don't expect to purchase another coat for a long, long time, which makes the price ($243 for black medium) of the coat justified. I definitely recommend this jacket.

This thing is absurdly powerful. Can it cut a rolled tatami mat? How about a pile of them, all at once? That's what they show it doing on Cold Steel's free promo DVD, "Sword Proof." In the catalog, they boast that the Grosse Messer can cut through a phone book. That is an understatement. On its way to the chopping block, the Grosse Messer just passes through the phone book as if it's hardly there.

The specs say it weighs about 4 pounds, but it's really about 3 1/2. I find it's best gripped and swung like a bokken or katana, and it handles much like a katana-- a very nose-heavy katana on steroids.

The leather sheathe has no rings or other hardware by which it could be attached to a belt or harness. I think that's because the grosse messer is not meant to be carried. It's meant to be hung over the hearth and used for home defense, much like a 12-gauge shotgun, except the grosse messer might do more damage.

Cold Steel touts it as a historical piece, but I don't know of any existing grosse messer that's like this one. Nor is it the most luxuriously-appointed blade. It is, however, an utterly ridiculous quantity of brute cutting power, and surprisingly agile, even in my small hands. It is not a subtle, refined, or noble weapon. The Chinese equipped its peasant armies with a similar blade, the dadao, and with a minimum of training, ordinary farmers were able to chop through armor like so much cardboard. That's the sort of weapon the grosse messer is. "Big knife," indeed.
