Camelbak Tri-Zip 100 oz/3.0L ACU Digital Camouflage Review

I'm not a "bug out" guy. I'm just someone who loves hiking (and Geocaching). I was looking for a pack that would let me enjoy my time in the wilderness even more. I researched packs for a long time before deciding on this one. In the final runnings were 5.11 RUSH 24, Maxpedition Condor II, Camelbak Motherlode, and this pack (Camelbak Tri-Zip). Here's what I was looking for.

1. enough storage for two-day hiking trips.
2. hydration bladder compatibility.
3. balanced weight distribution.
4. MOLLE pouch compatibility.
5. comfortable for smaller framed adults.

While any of these packs could have been a decent choice, I eventually decided the Tri-Zip would be the right choice for me thanks to video and written reviews on all of the packs. Last weekend I took it out for the first time.

I attached a few MOLLE pouches to the pack for various things, such as a First-Aid kit, Geocache repair kit, radio, flashlight, compass, etc. I filled the bladder. I packed essential cool weather hiking gear, to include items like socks, a jacket, rain gear and gloves just in case I needed them. And I packed trail mix, jerky and a waterproof map pouch with trail maps of the park I was heading to. On the shoulder strap I attached my DeLorme GPS.

Picking up the pack I thought I might be in trouble because it weighed approximately 30 lbs. and I haven't done much hiking for the past few months. But, I wanted to put this pack to the test, so I hit the trails. I hiked for about 8 miles on hilly terrain before the sun disappeared below the horizon, so I headed back home. I could feel the weight of the pack, but it was very nicely balanced and therefore, it didn't slow me down or hurt to carry. The full hydration bladder didn't interfere with comfort. The added MOLLE pouches didn't throw the pack off balance.

One of the features I was looking for was comfort for smaller framed adults. I'm 5'5" tall and weigh 145 lbs. This is the first pack that felt as though it really fit me. And because it's easily adjustable in multiple locations, it would probably fit a lot of different body types and frames just as well as it does me.

Diamond Sports Pro Soft Toss Net Review

This my first backstop / soft toss net type purchase. It is 8x8 which is a really big net. I honestly didn't think about how big it was when I bought it. When I set it up in my living room I found out. I love it though. The net itself is a really great quality. I didn't get instructions with it but just by looking at the picture I had it together in no time. It breakes down into a small duffle bag and it takes less than 5 minutes to put up. It snaps together. Nothing to it, really. It took about 2 minutes to break it down the first time. I was pleasantly surprised. I expected it to be harder and when I didn't get instructions I figured that was an omen. I was wrong. It works great for soft toss and as a backstop for my daughter pitching. I don't have anything else to compare it to but it is a quality product in my eyes. It comes with a single stake to anchor it down but it;s so big that I don't need it. The price was right too compared to other nets. Just a heads up... if you search google products for this net you just might find it for less than $170 like I did.

Hatsan 125TH Air Rifle Combo, Black air rifle Review

This gun is a beast. It is extremely powerful and accurate. At 50 yards it still shoots straight so you don't need to hold over. Will blow a hole through 1.5" oak wood within multiple shots (20ish). This isn't what you'd consider a neighborhood friendly gun since it is loud, strong and shoots for long distances. It practically is a regular .22LR. The only down side to this gun is that it is fairly heavy which makes it hard to shoot free hand and there is a stronger kickback that is not like most air rifles. Some people may have a problem at first breaking the barrel but its not that hard. The thumbhole stock makes shooting more comfortable and accurate. If you want to euthanize pests like squirrels, opossums, raccoons, groundhogs, rabbits etc, this gun will have no problem as long as you are in the right game seasons for some of the animals that were listed. Overall this gun is the best air rifle I've owned or shot and I would say probably the most powerful spring air gun on the market with roughly 30 foot pounds generating at the muzzle.

Osprey Packs Kestrel 58 Backpack (Talus Grey, Medium/Large) Review

I grew up out West (Utah) and spent much of my summers camping in the mountains using an external frame pack. Currently I live in South Florida. While camping in South Florida is entirely different than camping out West, I am a Scout master and there is no way I was going to let the boys get away without camping at least once every couple months.

Some of the more enthusiastic boys have outgrown car camping so I decided to take them for a weekend backpacking trip. Having left my dependable external frame pack back in Utah years ago, I went on a quest to find a new pack. I really loved my old external frame but decided to try a higher quality internal frame pack.

After a lot of looking I ended up vacillating between an Osprey Kestral, Osprey Atmos, and an Osprey Aether. Ultimately, I purchased the Kestrel 58. Since the weekend backpacking trip was the first time any of the boys had backpacked (our troop does own a handful of Teton 3400 packs), I took a bit more weight than I normally would have--35lbs. Over 2.5 days I did 18 miles through sand. I had absolutely no legitimate problems with the pack. In fact, the pack transferred the weight to my hips so effectively that I had no back discomfort or soreness during or after the trip.

I am not going to bother with what I liked about the pack; rather I am going to explain what I mean by "no legitimate problems with the pack."

* The hip belt pockets were small. This is a nit-picky complaint and since most packs do not even have hip belt pockets, this is not a legitimate complaint.

* I would have liked more pockets in the pack, but by design, internal frame packs have fewer pockets. So again, this is not really a legit complaint since the Kestrel had as many if not more pockets than most external frame packs I have looked at.

* HERE IS THE SEMI LEGIT COMPLAINT - the tension straps would loosen up over time. I am not sure if this is a common problem with the pack or is something that may have been caused by the humidity. Regardless, it took mere seconds to adjust the tension while trekking along, and a simple alligator clip will solve the problem (which I am headed out to buy this weekend)

The Kestrel is a great pack, and one that I would recommend. Having grown up an avid hiker, my only regret was not deciding to buy one of the more expensive and advanced packs offered by Osprey--and let's be honest, the Kestrel is not exactly cheap. If I had to do it again, I would probably get the Aether, or maybe even spring for the extremely expensive Argon, which I never even originally considered because of the price.

Look, if you want a great pack and are not someone like me who spent his youth camping and hiking, buy the pack, you will be very very pleased. Heck, the only part of me that is not pleased with the purchase is the part of me that is planning a weeklong backpacking trip in the Grand Tetons in May/June 2013.
